In 1987 the month of March was officially designated as Women’s History by congress. Before there was a “Womens History Week” in Samona County, California in 1978. That week was every single year that March 8th landed on. This continued and eventually spread across the country until President Jimmy Carter issued the first proclamation of “Women’s History Week”.
This went on for many years until Congress passed “Public Law 100-9” which proclaimed that March will be Women’s History Month. In between the years of 1988-1994 congress passed an additional law requesting and authorizing the current president to proclaim the march as Women’s History Month.
During this month many people may go out and buy from women owned businesses. Lawrence Township has posted on social media platforms about women in the township. Such as women who drive buses or work in the transportation or in the district and in the schools.
Women’s history month is important because it teaches young girls and women about things that women have done and how they have impacted our lives and what they have done for the women of today. In the early 1900’s the women fought to be able to vote. Madam Curie made a break in the science world and became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize. Women History month is important because it teaches young girls that they can be anything they want to and not have to worry about what society thinks and what they say they can and cannot do.
